A BARRY man who set up a popular local history club was nominated for Barry Citizen of the Year in a big way.
Andrew Hinton, 43, of Lidmore Road set up Pastfinders in 1996.
Through his dedication and passion, he has come to be known as the force behind its success.
The club now meets regularly to combine country walks with exploring the history of local places of interest.
One of the co-founders, Rachel Armitage, is so impressed by Mr Hinton's work she set out a detailed nomination presentation of his achievements to date in a 20 page folder.
She told the News: "I helped Andy set the club up, but through other commitments I had to drop my level of involvement. I have no doubt that he is the reason Pastfinders is enjoying its seventh season in a row." Andrew, who works for COS on the Ty Verlon Industrial Estate, had no idea he had been nominated.
At the ceremony held in the Mayors Parlour on May 2, he said: "Until the letter came inviting me here, I was in the dark.
"It's flattering being put forward for recognition, but the trouble Rachel went through means more to me than anything."
To help tell the panel of judges how important Andrew is to Pastfinders, Rachel interviewed members. The comments reflected the wealth of warm feeling they have for him.
Wendy Fawcus of Barry said: "Andy Hinton is Pastfinders. The tremendous work he has, and continues to put into the group, from which the Vale of Glamorgan benefits, should be recognised."
Sue and Roger Thomas of Bonvilston added: "Andy has for many years been prepared to devote a great deal of his time and energy helping others to understand and appreciate the culture and local history of our town and area.
"He has tirelessly organised visits, walks, and talks on our local heritage and successfully brought toge-ther a diverse group of people with a common interest on our environment."
