Vaughan in the money

A BARRY man has found himself on a winning streak after outsmarting a radio DJ.

Vaughan Davies, 65, of Court Road pocketed a cool £561 on the BBC Radio Wales show hosted by Owen Money on Thurs-day May 9.

The quiz buff, who went blind at 18, ended the disc jockey's longest-running 'Secret Seven' contest which had been going on for 14 weeks and four days.

Seven new questions are asked each day, and the prize fund grows every time.

The final question was a tough one, but it didn't hold Vaughan back for a minute. Owen asked him: "Which television personality was born Caterina Irene Elena Maria Imperiali Del Principi Di Francavilla?"

Vaughan answered: "Katie Boyle" and took the prize.

The quiz addict is not the only one in the Davies house who takes home the big wins. Vaughan's wife Dorothy recently won a trip to Corfu with rival radio station Real Radio.

Vaughan added: "After winning little things over the years, our wins seem to be getting bigger. First the holiday, then this. I couldn't believe I'd won. I was shaking.

"We'll put the money towards having a really good time in Corfu later this year."

The trivia whiz puts his vast general knowledge down to listening to television, radio and talking books. He regularly goes to Wednesday night sessions at the Barry RAFA club with his guide dog Harvest.

Owen Money, whose show is now the most listened-to programme on Radio Wales, said: "I'm glad it was won at last, because it's been going on for a long time now. The 'Secret Seven' has been a talking point and it's really put the afternoon show on the map.

"I know Vaughan is a bit of a buff because he has been on before. But he did extremely well to get all the questions right."
