50 YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of May 8, 1952:

Work was commenced on Monday on the re-construction of Romilly School Hall, badly damaged by fire on August 18, 1951.

An interesting course on modern literature given by Mr C J Brooke, BA at the Barry Boys Grammar School concluded on Tuesday evening.

The Primrose Dinner for members of Cadoxton Womens Branch of the Barry Conservative and Unionist Association was held at the Osborne Rooms on Friday.

A presentation was made to Miss Winnie Williams, MSc, by members of the Old Girls Association of Barry Grammar School when they met on Monday. Miss Williams became a mistress at the school in 1914 and became a senior assistant mistress in 1935.

The Secretary of the Old Peoples Welfare Committee for Wales, Colonel Llewellyn Evans, visited No 2 Branch of the Old Age Pensioners at their meeting on Monday.

A description of the growth of Barry from the period between 1871 and 1881 and right up until the present day was given by Mr T L Spickett, retired chief sanitary inspector, at the meeting of the Old Age Pensioners of No 3 (Suburb) Branch on Monday.

EXTRACTS from the Barry & District News of May 5, 1977:

A disturbing total of 16 traders who were members of the Barry Chamber of Trade and Commerce last year have gone out of business. This has been revealed by Cllr John Jenkins, the retiring president of the BCTC.

On Thursday a social evening was held at the Tynewydd Inn to mark the presentation of a video tape recording system to the Barry Adult Centre for the Mentally Handicapped.

Fifty six Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council dwellings were unoccupied this week because of problems with the councils housing maintenance programme and if this figure remained static the authority would stand to lose just over £25,300 a year in rent and rates.

Coastguards from Barry were called to cliffs at Lavernock on Sunday to help two boys who had become trapped after trying to escape from the incoming tide.

Former Barry boy, 16-year-old Justin Church has gained the Espinola Memorial Scholarship to the Royal Ballet School, the first time the award has ever come to Wales.

A social evening with members of the Barry Island OAP and a talk by Mr Gareth Howe have been among the recent activities of the St Baruchs Ladies Group.
