Council comes to the aid of the party

THE VALE of Glamorgan Council is in the party mood - at last!

Barry's local authority is offering to help pay the costs a a big jubilee bash.

The move comes after months of complaints from Barrians who were desperate to party but could not afford the high costs. The main obstacles were insurance cover and the price of road closures.

Now, with just over one week left for applications to be put in, the council has agreed to meet the costs of staging a street event including the advertising costs and legal fees.

The council will even fund the necessary basic public liability insurance for approved applicants.

After considering applications for parties held on the public highway, successful streets will have their access closed with the legal and advertising costs met by the local authority.

There is even a chance of getting a grant.

An advertisement placed by the council in the Barry and District News clearly states: "The council will financially support events that help create stronger communities. Grants will be given for specific events whether organised by community councils, voluntary groups or residents' associations. Applications will be judged on merit."

To apply for a grant, the organiser's name, address and telephone number and details of the event must be supplied, stating how the event will benefit the community with an estimate of its total cost and the amount of grant money applied for. Applicants must also tell how the money will be spent, and how the rest of the event will be funded, if the total cost won't be met.

Residents of Hannah Street are overjoyed. Sue Potter said: "At this short notice we didn't think we could raise the money. Now we can ask people in the street for a small contribution, and get everyone involved.

"If they want to help, they should come and see me in 4, Hannah Street"
