Schools kwik cricket festival

PUPILS from six schools demonstrated excellent skills in the first Vale of Glamorgan Primary Schools' Indoor Kwik Cricket Festival.

Organised by the Vale Sports Development Unit, the event, at the Colcot Indoor Sports Centre, Barry, involved youngsters from Oakfield, Gladstone, winners Ysgol Sant Curig (who received a bag of kit), and Palmerston, from Barry, St Joseph's from Penarth, and Llansannor.

With the emphasis on everyone having a fun cricketing experience, the teams of three boys and three girls certainly seemed to enjoy themselves, either bowling, batting or fielding.

The reward for each participating pupil was a certificate of achievement presented by the Director of The Cricket Board of Wales, Mark Frost. who stressed that this type of festival was an excellent way of introducing the game of cricket to youngsters and would, hopefully, inspire them to join one of the many local clubs offering opportunities for juniors.

Festival co-ordinator Karen Davies, Dragon Sports Officer, extended her thanks to the three umpires - Pete Hardwick, Nigel Williams and Andrew Van Os -- for their hard work, and also the teachers for assisting with the scoring. "An exhausting but great day was enjoyed by all involved", she said.
