Locals fight car problem

BARRY'S growing problem of untaxed and dumped cars is being tackled head on by fed-up locals.

After last week's article in the News, residents have united, bombarding us with reports of abandoned vehicles.

There have been reports of cars left in Lundy Park, in the Pontypridd Road area, Darwin Close, Gadlys Road East, Broad Street, High Street, and Holton Road.

Ronald Watkins, 75, of the St David's Estate, Coldbrook said: "To find a large number of cars untaxed in Barry is no shock to us. We've been putting up with it for nearly 10 years. There are at least seven untaxed cars here. Four remain in constant use. Responsible people on the estate put their cars in garages to make room for road users. And the type of person responsible for leaving their cars untaxed cannot be reasoned with."

Shirley Thompson from Belvedere Crescent has a problem with abandoned cars. She added: "A patch of waste land at the bottom of our road has become a magnet for deserted vehicles. It makes the area look run-down and uncared for. It won't be long before all these cars are torched and become a real hazard."

Many people who called the office were wary of leaving their names for fear of repercussions, but they all had the same complaint in common.
