INTREPID Barry girl Rachel Wells' dreams will come true in September when she embarks on a six-month trip to Malaysia to work with children.
Rachel, 18, of Brookfield Avenue, will be flying out to Kuala Lumpur in September ready to go to the Hopehaven Centre for Special Children in Malacca.
The a sixth former at St David's RC College will be working alongside the Salvation Army at the centre.
The trip has been organised by Gap Activity Projects who interviewed Rachel for the voluntary position. They have teamed her up with Pembroke-shire girl Eluned Jones.
Rachel will now delay university studies at either Reading or Sussex to read philosophy.
Former St Richard Gwyn RC School pupil Rachel said: "I've always dreamed of travelling and this is just what I wanted. Before I go I've got to do an intensive course of teacher training at the Shane English School in London. Then I'll be flying out with Qantas from Heathrow."
Rachel's family - mum Ann, dad Dave, brother Richard, 21, and boyfriend Pete Thomas, 19 - hope to fly out and visit her while she is there.
Rachel said: "The Hopehaven Centre deals with special children aged two up to 18. My project consists of improving their quality of life through education and care."
Before she goes Rachel needs to raise £3,000 to cover accommodation and airfares. She is currently targeting Barry businesses for help.
After the project, Rachel and Eluned hope to travel to Singapore, Australia and America for further adventures.
Rachel added: "I've travelled around, to Kenya and the Caribbean, but I've never been as far afield as this.
"I'm looking forward to it, I can't wait - but it's going to be completely nerve-wracking."
