REGARDING the letter from Mr Peters about King Square (Barry & District News, March 28, 2002).
The Library was the first public building erected on the Square and opened in 1906 before the Town Hall, which was opened on April 22, 1908 by Council Chairman, W J Williams, JP.
Houses in Holton Road, fronting the recently completed Town Hall were then demolished and underground toilet facilities were provided.
The area in front of the Town Hall was named "Town Hall Square" until the Coronation of King George V on May 20, 1910, when over 20,000 people assembled there to hear the Chairman of the Council, W R Lee, JP, read out the proclamation.
After this date it was known as "King Square."
