THE SETTING up of a Barry based centre of development is a clear indication of the ever increasing popularity of lacrosse.
With more and more youngsters showing an interest in a sport which originated in North America, the Welsh Lacrosse Association has set up similar centres across South Wales, and, with the support of the Vale of Glamorgan Council sports development unit, is running special weekly coaching sessions.
Being held at two Barry venues - the leisure centre and the Colcot sports centre - the Friday sessions (5pm-6pm) cost £1 each and are for boys and girls aged nine to 14 years.
The WLA will hold tournaments for centres of development throughout the year, the first of which is at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, on April 14.
The Barry group have entered a team of 12 and, although very young, they are eagerly looking forward to their first tournament.
Information on lacrosse development in the Vale is available at the centres during term times or from Dave Jones on 029 2051 2901 or Vale sports development manager Paul Nanji on 01446 704614.
