IMAGINE a world where robots do all your work - even replacing children in a family.
That is the fantasy realm of AI - Artificial Intelligence, where Haley Joel Osment plays David, a young robotic boy adopted by an American couple. David, the first android ever to feel human emotions, has been taken in by them as a temporary substitute for their own son Martin, who has been frozen until a cure is found for his terminal illness.
When Martin is cured, David soon has to leave and sets out to find a way to stay with his family. On his way he meets the sexually compromising Gigolo Joe (Jude Law) who introduces him to the world of robots - including scary flesh fairs.
This is a great film which has brilliant, state-of-the-art special effects such as New York under water and a helicopter that travels above and below the sea.
Sadly, these strengths are not matched by the plot, which offers a very disappointing ending.
Directed by Steven Spielberg and an Amblin/Stanley Kubrick production, this is away from the norm and totally space age.
