Man bit part of ex's ear off

A BARRY man who bit off part of his ex-girlfriend's ear has been caged.

Andrew Dyer of Shakespeare Road, was jailed for two years on Monday for carrying out an attack of "extreme barbarity" on his former lover.

The 20-year-old pleaded guilty to wounding and breaching a probation order imposed after assaulting a police officer.

Cardiff Crown Court heard Dyer had been on a night out with friends when he saw his ex-girlfriend Kelly Marshall, 19, with her own friends.

The couple, who were said to have had a "volatile relationship" had split up just days before the attack last October.

Prosecutor Huw Wallace told the court that the couple started arguing and, in the course of the fight, Dyer bit off part of Miss Marshall's ear. But Richard Jones, defending, said the couple had now reconciled and despite the attack were back together.

Volatile

He told the court: "They have been in a volatile relationship with each other for four years. They still see each other - she has even visited him on remand.

"He expresses great remorse, and she is sticking by him."

Judge Stephen Hopkins QC told Dyer that he did not necessarily deserve to continue his relationship with Miss Marshall.

He said: "This was an attack of extreme barbarity. You bit her on the hand and arm.

"You then chased her and bit her on the ear - tearing part of it away. Witnesses described seeing it lodged in her hair.

"She may be standing by you, but it may be you do not deserve her. "If you do stay with her, treat her with more kind regard in future."
