Fight for it

IN ANSWER to the letter headed 'So selfish,' February 28 ,2002, how apt the heading.

A few points to the writer: The rent office that was burned served Gibbonsdown and Treharne Estates, together a far bigger area, and more vastly populated than Cadoxton Moors.

Some sixteen years ago a number of residents from Gibbonsdown formed a residents board, to fight for better homes, environment, and services, an estate based rent office being one.

We also wanted our own road sweeper and a residents board office where residents could call with any problems concerning their community.

Like Cadoxton Moors area we also have a great many senior citizens, young mums, dads and disabled persons, who weekly have to pay rents and rates etc at the Post Office.

If the writer knows Gibbonsdown then he/she will know we also have to walk up hills to the nearest Post Office or catch a bus, but that doesn't mean it has to be acceptable.

The residents of Gibbonsdown haven't sat back and waited for things to happen, they have been instrumental in making things happen to improve their community.

A close working relationship with our local community police officers ensures that unsocial behaviour by a few is kept to a minimum.

Unlike the writer I do feel sorry for people who do not have basic amenities and services, but why not try to work with other agencies to improve your area, and give your residents a voice - as we have done.

But you will never please everyone.
