Video/DVD Review: Planet of the Apes

IT IS 2029 and US Air Force astronaut Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg) is on board the space station Oberon.

There, he is helping to launch chimpanzee pilots into outer space, but when one chimp loses communication, Leo has to launch a rescue mission.

However, in the style of a typical Hollywood movie it all goes horribly wrong and Leo crash lands on a jungle-like planet inhabited by English-speaking apes.

And so starts Tim Burton's mystifying Planet of the Apes (12), starring a host of big names and boasting enviable special effects.

It follows Leo as he is captured by the ruling apes and sold as a slave. From there he must befriend other apes, and gather up fellow humans to fight for freedom.

This is a great film, with some fantastic acting (including a cameo role by Charlton Heston - the star of the original movie).

It also includes one brilliant twist at the end - and no, it's not the Statue of Liberty as in the original. This big picture just gets you thinking about what could happen one day...
