A SERVING Army sergeant is tackling a new challenge with the Vale of Glamorgan.
On secondment from the 21st Signals Regiment for two years, Julian McTavish has been appointed the Vale's new rugby development officer working with both the Council and the Welsh Rugby Union.
A WRU senior tutor, Julian is currently national coach of the Welsh District Rugby Union who play Germany and Denmark in April.
In addition, he works with the Welsh elite squad (aged 16-21) and coaches the Glamorgan Wanderers' development side.
Educated at Barry Boys' Comprehensive School, Julian's main role will be to develop and promote rugby union within the Vale by expanding links between local clubs and schools.
As part of the programme, Julian will work with secondary and primary schools to encourage both boys and girls to play rugby and, as a WRU level 3 coach, will encourage teachers to work towards coaching qualifications.
