A BARRY Primary school has received a gold star from Jane Hutt AM after a glowing inspection report.
The Welsh Health Minister visited St Helen's Roman Catholic School to congratulate staff and pupils on their top marks.
She told the News: "I was delighted to visit this excellent school. The children were so happy and motivated. They obviously love learning in this friendly, supportive school. "The dedication of the headteacher and staff shines throughout the whole school. St Helen's provides a great start in life."
The Maesycwm Street school, which serves 165 pupils, was inspected by Estyn in early December.
A total of 63 lessons was seen and standards were very good in 10 percent, good in 80 percent and satisfactory in 10%. No unsatisfactory work was seen.
Standards in all subjects across the curriculum and throughout the school were "at least good, with very good features in art and physical education." The inspectors remarked pupils' literacy, numeracy and IT skills significantly contribute to the achievement of good standards in the school.
The school's performance in the National Curriculum assessments over the last five years has been "consistently and significantly higher" than local and national averages. In the last two years, the school was in the top 25 percent of similar schools in Wales.
Teachers were praised for their "highly skilful, sensitive and imaginative teaching, which makes learning fun and memorable for pupils." Teachers provide very good role models and teaching is characterised by mutual respect between teachers and pupils, the report continued.
The quality of life in the school was described as "very good." The inspectors were particularly impressed with the "inclusiveness" of the school.
Provision for pupils who have special educational needs is good; they make good progress and "arrangements are thorough and caring."
Parents are very supportive of the school and are actively encouraged to take part in the life and work of the school. An enthusiastic Parents and Friends' Association raises large sums of money for the school each year.
Headteacher Mrs Barbara Ellis said: "We are delighted with the outstanding report the school has received. It is a tribute to the highly committed and dedicated staff, the children, parents and governors at our school."
