IT WAS with wry amusement that I read of the councils decision to restrict Barry Islands steam train activities, because of a smoke problem.
Apparently it might inconvenience the residents of the Waterfront, who also called for the steam whistle only to be used in an emergency.
How can our "planners" be said to be attempting to encourage tourism, and at the same time screw everything down to suit the residents of this new housing estate. Just what do they expect in that part of a seaside town, whos very function is to entice people to visit its tourist attractions.
Last summer, I attended the most wondrous lifeboat event. How long will it be before the powers that be capitulate to demands for restrictions and rate reductions, if other happy/noisy events are allowed to be held on their patch. How long before the people of the burgeoning housing development on the Island itself complain about chip and burger smells and the sounds of fairground rides and childrens laughter.
I hope that the council will have the guts to say "we cater for people looking for fun, so, put up or shut up!"
By the way, I saw a ship come into the dock the other day, and it blew smoke and sounded its hooter, this really is too much. Something must be done!
