Council will get tough on tippers

THE VALE of Glamorgan Council's crackdown on illegal dumping has hit a Barry builder in the pocket.

The builder, who initially paid £65 to have some building rubble removed by an unknown lorry driver, was subsequently charged £400 by the council after the driver dumped the waste material in Gilbert Lane East.

The news comes hot on the heels of two Home Office cautions issued to local builders for fly tipping in the Vale.

The council's cabinet member for visible services, Councillor Gerald Fletcher, said: "The Vale will not tolerate fly-tipping and offenders will be tracked down and prosecuted.

"We are certain the use of CCTV surveillance in local lanes and known problem areas will result in more people being apprehended and prosecuted. Be assured, each fly-tipping offence is now being investigated."

Anyone wishing to report cases of fly tipping can contact the council on 029 2067 3099.

Spokesman Denise White added: "All calls will be dealt with confidentially and can help us improve the quality of life within local communities.

"We are beginning to make a difference and, with the public's continued assistance, we can stop this blight on our countryside."
