Decision soon on airport link

A DECISION on building a new trunk road to Cardiff International Airport - which many believe is vital for the future prosperity of Barry - could be just weeks away.

Campaigners believe it could help to create hundreds of new jobs at the airport as well as strengthen Barry's economy by improving access to the town for businesses and commuters.

The National Assembly has pledged more than £30million in a new construction budget for 2002 to 2003, with an additional £9million between 2002 and 2004, although it is not yet known what areas will benefit from these funds.

David Melding, Conserv-ative AM for South Wales Central, said: "I was disappointed that the scheme was not included in Thursday's Draft Budget.

"The Assembly should aim to make Cardiff the premier airport of western Britain and help strengthen the economy of Wales in the process. This requires an airport with efficient road and rail links."

A National Assembly spokesman said: "The draft budget is separate to monies for road schemes in Wales. Details yet to be finalised will be announced before December and will list projects around Wales in the next 12 months to two years."

Though Cardiff Internat-ional Airport is one of the UK's top five airports, in terms of growth a modern link road would make the airport attractive for business passengers and air freight traffic.

David Melding added: "It is essential the airport is linked by a modern, direct trunk road to the motorway."

Vale MP John Smith is also a supporter of the road.
