Youth have voice

A BARRY youth worker's claims that the town's young people are being ignored have been angrily denied by the Vale of Glamorgan Council.

David Prosser, operational manager for Training and Post 16 Education in the area, has hit back at Mike Bendell, who claimed local teenagers are 'without a voice.'

As reported in last week's News, the project co-ordinator for Castleland Youth Organisation and the Vibe experience criticised the local authority for the handling of the youth service.

But Dave Prosser disagrees and, while admitting that facilities are limited, says there are many excellent youth projects within the town.

He said: "While I agree there is definitely room for further provision, there are successful examples of youth initiatives in operation in Barry, organised or supported by the Youth Service, notably in Maes-y-Coed, Cadoxton and Barry Island. Holm View has recently opened a provision for young people and the Youth Service, Education Service, Barry College and the police are working in partnership to develop a motor vehicle initiative."

Mr Prosser added: "Mr Bendell"s criticism of our priorities should be aimed at central government and the National Assembly, who have set the agenda for young people's issues and the target age range."

He added he had met Mr Bendell and his management committee, which includes several parents, to explain the situation regarding Castleland Junior Youth Club.

He has informed him of possible sources of funding, and assured him that he would assist in any application submission.

Mr Prosser concluded: "The Senior Youth Club at the Pear Tree Cafe will be available as soon as is practically possible.

"However, it will be funded and managed by the Vale of Glamorgan Council's Youth Service, with the Vibe Experience. If he wishes to work in partnership, this will be in the best interests of the young people of Barry."

n The Vale of Glamorgan Council's Llantwit Major Leisure Centre has launched its own Friday night youth club - a joint initiative between the council and the town's youth centre.
