A YOUNG Barry boy was invited to the Mayor's Parlour last week to tell her about his dreams of going to the West Indies.
Mike O'Shea of Woodham Park, Barry, was delighted to hear that he had been selected for the West Region's under-15 team's tour of the West Indies next year.
But there is just one drawback. The trip, running from March 29 to April 14, 2002, will cost around £1,500, and that's not including any spending money.
Mike said: "I was thrilled when I found out I was on the team. The highlight of my cricketing career so far was being named as captain of the West Region's under-13s for 2001. But this has surpassed that. I see this as a great opportunity for me, and a massive learning experience."
So far, many Barry businesses have come forward to give this talented youngster financial help. Dan Evans gave £25, Camilleri Roofing donated £100 and Eclipse Printing gave a £200 cheque.
Mike said: "Everything helps. My parents will do whatever it takes to make sure I can go, but if there is anyone out there who can offer assistance, it will be greatly appreciated."
Mike already has an outstanding record. The Barry Comprehensive boy is the only player, of any age, to score a double century for a Wales representative side. His 206 not out was the highlight of last year, a great season during which he scored 942 runs with an average just over 120.
With this record bolstering him, and still only 14 years old, Mike is sure to take his talent all the way to the top.
