BARRIANS have joined fellow Vale campaigners in a show of support for a well-known former headmaster and social services inspector.
Members of the national Campaign on Behalf of Falsely Accused Carers and Teachers (FACT) came together for a conference with local group 'Friends of Derek Brushett' (FoDB) on Saturday, October 6.
Convicted paedophile Brushett is serving 12 years at HMP Albany, on the Isle of Wight for offences against young boys in his care during his time at Bryn Y Don approved school.
The conference at Dinas Powys Church Hall and four guest speakers talked about subjects ranging from the role of the expert witness to miscarriages and the media.
Gail Saunders from the FoDB said: "By the time the conference started, there was standing room only. I think well over 200 people attended.
"We had a lot of support from people who have been falsely accused, as well as friends and family.
"Derek sent his best wishes. He knows what we are doing for him and appreciates all our actions."
The allegations came from 23 different complainants and all date back to the 1970s.
But, as one member of FACT, Tom Carole, whose own father was accused of abuse dating back to the 1970s, said, it's time people stopped being afraid of these 'bullies'.
He told the News: "My father retired in 1980, and it wasn't until 1999 the allegations arose. The police came at 7am, and took my father to a police station miles away from the village. He wasn't told the names of his accusers until he was charged."
He added: "I believe if you have something to hide, then you should be afraid. But if you know, like my father knew, that you have done nothing wrong, then it's time to stand up to these bullies who make these false allegations."
