FOUR VALE of Glamorgan clubs have opted to become part of the Dragon Sport scheme encouraging more seven to 11-year-old children to get fit and play sport.
Vale and Barry Harriers, Barry Athletic Tennis Club, Barry Netball Club and the Barry Vixens Hockey Club, are committed to starting up junior sections or expanding existing set-ups and, in an effort to familiarise themselves with the scheme's ethos of fun, fair play and opportunities for all, 12 parent helpers and experienced coaches have trained as Dragon Sport organisers and helpers.
As a thankyou, Dragon Sport co-ordinator Rachel McGuinness presented each club with a bag of specialised equipment designed specifically for children of Dragon Sport age.
The Vale's leisure spokesman, Cllr Mike Harvey said: "It is great to see partnerships such as this at work in the Vale and so many people willing to give up their free time to benefit junior sport."
The scheme is funded through the Sports Council for Wales' £5m investment in junior sport and works in conjunction with the Council's sports development unit.
Anyone wishing to get involved in junior sport should contact Karen Davies at the sports development unit on 01446 704728 or turn up for training at: Barry Netball Club (Colcot Sports Centre) - Under-11s, Monday 5pm to 6pm; Under-16s, Monday 8pm to 9pm. Vale and Barry Harriers (Jenner Park) - Year 7 and under, Monday 6pm to 7pm; and Year 8 and over, Monday 7pm to 8pm. Barry Vixens Hockey Club (Colcot Sports Centre) - Under-11s and Under-16s, Thursday 6.30pm to 7.30pm. Barry Athletic Tennis Club (Barry Island), Friday 5.30pm to 6.30pm, and Sunday 10am to 12 noon.
