BARRIANS have just four shopping days to go before the long-awaited Morrisons supermarket throws open its doors.
After months of intense construction work, the Waterfront site at Penny Way is ready and waiting for the thousands of locals who are expected at the launch on Monday, October 8.
But whilst the big day may be a while away, keen staff are putting some finishing touches to the store with the help of local school-children.
On Tuesday young pupils from High Street Primary school took up the challenge of making sure that the Northern-based company had done their homework.
The children went through the site with a fine toothcomb to ensure that all the bilingual signs were correct.
And one or two deliberate mistakes meant that the children needed to keep their eyes peeled while general manager Paul O'Hanlon took them on a tour of the store.
But it wasn't all hard work, once the youngsters had tracked down all the mis-spelled signs there was a special treat waiting for them - a snack at the supermarket's cafe.
Not only did this keep the children happy but it gave new staff the chance to try out their serving skills in the 200-seater restaurant.
Anne Legg, store personnel manager told the News: "We changed lots of the bilingual signs around the store to see if the High Street children could spot them.
"Also they visited the fish counter, the fresh preparation area, tasted pizza and visited the oven fresh and pie shop.
"I have to say that they have all done themselves proud. They've behaved admirably and are a credit to their school."
Store general manager Paul O'Hanlon added: "We're delighted that the children have been able to play a part in the preparations for opening day.
"We look forward to welcoming them and their parents back into the store after we open the doors to the public at 9am on Monday, October 8."
Barry Island Primary School will be at the store today - see next week's News for pictures.
